Selling your beats to rappers

Here is the bottom line if you want to sell your beats to rappers you need to be where the rappers are. The above is a small list of where rappers and producers visit to buy, lease and network.

So if you are reading this you are probably just trying to figure out exactly what you need to do in order to get started. I highly recommend you start with one of the beat selling market place platforms like Airbit or Beat Brokerz. Here's why, because we are artist and we need to spend much of our time creating music. Platforms like Airbit and Beat Brokerz were created to help independent artist like yourself promote, protect and sell your beats to rappers and other entertainers.

These marketplaces will help you protect your music but this does not mean that you should not do your on homework and understand the music industry because it is a jungle out here.

Other places you can sell your beats

Forums and Facebook Groups
You probably are already in some forums but if you are not just google the phrase "Music Producers forums" and just start joining soe forums. I like them because many of them have competitions where you can win prizes and also get feedback on some of your music. And if you are totally sensitive you can find some people that are willing to give you some constructive criticism on your music.

What you are looking for is the opportunity to start networking and the more connections you have the further you can go in this business. No rap producer never became successful never made it big time without getting out there and working with people.

What Should I do After I Sign Up

Don't think that just because you have signed up for a few platforms that you are done. That's not how this works. You need to start promoting your brand as much as possible. You have to realize that you are competing against thousands of other music producers on these websites so how are you going to stand out.

Local Networking
The most effective form of marketing will always be face to face interaction. If you are in a major city you can find where up and coming rappers perform like lounges, clubs or talent show events. Show up and start passing out your business cards or give out your IG profile.

I can almost guarantee that a few rappers will call or reach out to you through IG. Send them some samples of your music and when they are ready to purchase, send them a link to where they can buy your beats from one of the platforms that you signed up for.

Make Videos
Video is the most powerful way you can promote your beats to rappers. Have you seen those videos on YouTube that says something like this "Rick Ross Type Beat". I'm sure you have and you need to do the same. But remember you need to standout from the crowd so just adding some pictures to your video really isn't going to help much.

What if you actually added an introduction actually putting your in the video and maybe explaining what inspired you to make this beat. Not too many up and coming music producers are selling their beats to artist this way. Just know that whenever you are selling anything that the people are buying from the person and not just the product.

Upload those videos to YouTube and you will see that you will get more views and responses to your beats than your competitors.

Buy Ads In The Marketplaces
One of the reasons why I told you to sign up for all of the marketplaces for music producers is because many of them offer advertisement options. Basically you can buy ad placements on their website. This will give you the opportunity to skip the line and get your music ahead of your other competitors because rappers wills see your beats first and maybe buy from you.

Should I Sell Exclusive Rights or Lease My Beats

Pro's/Con's of Selling Exclusive Rights to Your Music
  • You can only sell your beats one time but it is for a much higher rate than leasing
  • It's much easier to sell your beats when you build your brand and this will draw more serious buyers
  • This is seen by many to be a much more professional way to handle your business. Some artist look down on producers who lease their music
  • You can open the door to network with important artists, possibly collaborating with them on your own projects
  • You can work with artist who serious and have some money to spend. They actually have a budget for their project
  • You can make some money through publishing and royalties
  • You'll begin to be tapped to create custom work in the style of specific artists
  • Once you do work for some serious artist they will begin to ask you to do exclusive work with beats custom made for them

Pro's/Con's of Leasing Your Beats
  • You can earn money multiple times from the same beat because you can sell to more than one artist
  • Just know that each sale is not that much money because you make more money if it's an exclusive rights deal
  • Leasing your instrumental beats is viewed by many as being less professional. But in my honest opinion, do what you have to do to get your hustle on
  • You will attract lesser known clients while being ignored by the best
  • The truth is artist who lease beats really don't have that much cash and they probably want to haggle more than an exclusive buyer
  • Once you have leased the beat out it can b difficult to find a ton of other buyers
  • The bottom line is their are much more people you can sell too. There are more people looking to lease beats because the price rate is much lower

Tips for Selling Your Beats to Artist

Before you dive head first into taking your producing career to the next level. I just want to share with you some tips that will help make you better right now.

Build Up Your Catelogue
Before you start promoting all your music make sure you have at least 10 beats fully created and ready to go. Why? Because what if you sale one or two beats you want to have more that you can upload and keep your music out there.

Don't Put Out Too Much
This may sound like a contradiction from my last statement but it's not. You shouldn't upload all your music only because you don't want to overwhelm your buyers leaving them confused on what they should purchase. Try sharing only your beats that you believe will guarantee a sale. It's quality over quantity. All of your beats that you believe are just OK, give them away for free or lease them out to make some quick cash.

Market to Previous Buyers
Once you have a few purchases under your belt make sure you keep their contact information saved. Because your easiest sale will always be to someone who has bought from you in the past.

How Should I Price My Beats

When you are trying to sale your beats to rappers your prices have to be competitive. Because there are so many other producers out there you are competing against. So let's look at the two options for selling your beats which are: Leasing or Exclusive Rights

Prices for leasing options
The beauty about leasing your beats is that you can sale them to multiple artist. So you will see that the prices listed below are low but it's the average of the market.

  • 30 percent listed at less than $20
  • 20 percent  listed around $20
  • 30 percent listed around $35
  • 20 percent listed around $30
  • The Average Price is about $27 to lease a beat

Prices for exclusive rights
This basically means that you will be selling your beat to only one rapper. The price here really depends on your reputation. But on average I see prices on instrumental networks range from $25-$500. Only you can decide what you believe you should start selling your music at. Obviously, if you are just starting out you may want to start on the low end and work your way up.
Conclusion
So here is my final advice. Keep making music and master your craft and once you build up a library of music start your promotional campaign. But keep making music and don't get lazy. If you follow the steps I laid out in this article you will be selling beats to rappers across the globe in no time.
