7 Tips for Finding Motivation to Make Beats
Listen To New Stuff
You need to listen to ne music. And when I say new I mean a totally different genre of music from which you are accustomed too. So if you make hip hops beats get out o f your comfort zone and start listening too some country. You need your brain to make new connections which means you need to feed it new material. This will help spark and motivate some new sounds that you can create.
The point that I am trying to make is that you need to just listen to something different. It really doesn't matter what is as long as it is different. My advice for you is that you can't do this for one or two days. In order for you to find inspiration for making new beats, listen to new music for at least 3 weeks.
The science behind this is that you will allow your brain to de-focus on what you are use too so you brain makes those new connections for that new inspiration that you are in need of. I promise that you will have some new ideas and inspiration for your new beats.
Be Ready To Capture Inspiration
Whenever inspiration hits you, you have to be ready to capture that moment. Since I started a blog about making beats, I decided to keep a notebook with me at all times so I can write down topics I want to blog about later. But how does a music producer capture the beat in his head at the moment he hears it.
It's actually very easy, you need to start playing with beat making apps on your smartphone. I am not saying that you need to master them. Just understand the basics so you can put down a simple loop so later you can pull that sound up when you're sitting in front of your real beat machine. Don't let the moment of inspiration for a new beat escape you. Be ready at all time to capture anything that inspires you.
I probably should have wrote this but sometimes when you lack inspiration it's your mind telling you "take a break". Sometimes when I complete a new track but I feel like it is missing something, I just walk away and come back the next day. It's like giving your mind the opportunity to reboot itself. Walk away from music for a week or two and experience life so you can pull in motivation from life. When you come back you will refreshed and ignited to make some new music.
Get Out and See Stuff
I sort of touched on this point in the previous tip but life is a motivator. Taking a walk outside and hearing the sound of traffic, the birds chirping or people talking outside can spark a new idea in you. Remember you are not just a beat maker but you are also an artist. And any real artist can be inspired by anything they see, hear, touch or feel.
I like going for walks everyday, so I can give my mind a chance to day dream and to think about things other than music and business. Allowing your mind to drift off into a place of where you rarely allow it to go will give you some fresh new ideas. When you lack motivation and inspiration, you need to find other things that you can appreciate. So get out and see some new things that you can develop a passion for.
Go Play Some Video Games
This really isn't an idea that will help you find motivation but it's something I do when I feel like I have been creating too much music and I want to get away without having to go away. What I discovered is when I beat a new game or a difficult level I feel great. It is that feeling a goodness that I like to bring to my laptop to create some new hot beats. It works for me, so try it and it might work for you.
Train Your Inspiration
Sometimes we have those magical moments when we feel like we just got a new sound from the heavens above. But let's be honest it is not like that all the time for us. But did you know that you can actually train your brain to create inspiration.
You can do this by setting a specific routine for everytime you create music. This was difficult for me to do because as an artist I don't like to feel restricted to doing things just one way. But when I created a simple routine it was like I was triggering my brain to turn on and start producing some ideas.
If you create a set order, routine and schedule for when you make your beats your mind will respond to this and know when it should start releasing new ideas to you. So instead of waiting for the heavens to give you some motivation, you will actually be living in the heavens and can grab new ideas when you need them.
The science behind this are the these things in your brain called axons and dendrites. Information travels down through the axons and it releases chemicals to the dendrites to make a decision. So what does all of that mean. Your brain can create new connections for information to travel through.
Respect All of Your Ideas
I have had so many beats that I have made that I thought were trash and then I let one of my friends hear them and they thought it was the best beat they ever heard. Respect all of your beats even if you think they are trash. The worst thing you can do is delete your beats. Don't do it just save them in a folder on your computer called garbage beats.
The bottom line is that you never know what your next big hit is. This is actually what happened to the artist Nelly. He and the lunatics (his rap group) were in the studio and they played this beat that everyone including the music producer thought was basic. But Nelly heard something different and he created a song called "down down baby" from a beat that was supposedly trash. It was his first single and he made millions of dollars.
Just remember that you can always keep those beats in the garbage folder and come back to them months later. You might have new ideas and possibly enhance the sound of that beat. The point that I am trying to make is that you should throw away any music because you never know what gold you could be sitting on.
Collab With Other People/Producers
If we are honest and we remove our ego, the truth is that we get our inspiration from other people. The reason why you got into making beats is because of you heard music from someone else that inspired you. Even if you are an introvert it is still a good idea for you to work with other people. I think it's always a good idea to network with other producers and maybe even get inside a studio with them and start work on a project. Great people are inspired by other great people. If you go into it with an open mind you will learn new techniques and processes that you will use when you are back to making music by yourself.
Remember this is all about inspiration and not really about making the best track. Just being around positive energy will help your creativity. And hey, if you don't like what you created together just put in your folder full of terrible beats.
Make Some Acapella Beats
I am not going to go into details about how to actually make an acapella beat because you can watch a video here to learn more about it. The idea is to make a song from the lyrics to a song. Basically you are going to use the rhythm of the lyrics to create a new beat. This will give a pattern that you can work with and for me it is actually easier to create music to words that all ready have a flow. This is not only an inspirational practice it is really a skill you need to develop.
I hope these ideas I shared help you with creating new music because we all can fall out of our creative space. If you have any ideas that you would like to add just share them in the comment section below.
